Orion

Orion

The Imprisoned Architect

Orion existed long before the world of magic was ever created. He is the architect of the technology that brought it into being — a system designed for one purpose, then twisted into something else entirely by those who used it to imprison him. The civilization of magic, the Ascension ritual, the perversion of the gods' technologies into rituals of sacrifice and indulgence — all of it was built on his work, and none of it was what he intended. From his prison, he has spent ages running a quiet, patient operation aimed at undoing what was done. Haley is one of his agents. Her crash through the woods in Book I was not an accident — it was the visible piece of a mission he had assigned her: to secure a candidate approaching the Ascension ritual so that Orion could hijack it and reverse the imprisonment. When that first attempt collapses, Haley reports back through the portal that the mission failed. He waits. When Mantso emerges as a new viable candidate in Book III, Orion accelerates everything. By the time he steps into view he reads as the antagonist — pinning his own forced helpers with overwhelming gravity, willing to spend Phoebe's life to complete his plan. The truth is harder: he is an aggressive good guy taking measures so extreme they look indistinguishable from villainy.
